Goa Temple Stampede: What Triggered the Chaos That Claimed Lives?
In the early hours of Saturday, a tragic stampede unfolded at a packed temple in North Goa during the annual Larai Zatra festival, leaving several people dead and many injured. Eyewitnesses described a scene of confusion, fear, and panic — with some even claiming that a sudden electric shock or rumor triggered the deadly chaos.
What Happened?
According to North Goa Superintendent of Police Akshat Kaushal, over 70,000 devotees had gathered for the Zatra. Around 4-5 AM, the crowd inside the temple grew uncontrollably dense. “We’re still investigating the exact cause,” said Kaushal. “Some reports suggest that a rumor may have caused panic. Others mentioned an electric shock sensation felt by some in the crowd.”
He added, “We had nearly 400 police officers deployed to manage the event, but vacating over 50,000 people peacefully was our biggest challenge. This is the first time such an incident has occurred during this event.”
Government Response
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant rushed to the temple later that day to assess the situation. In response to the tragedy, the government has ordered a magisterial inquiry and taken immediate action. According to PTI, both the North Goa Collector and the Superintendent of Police were transferred following the incident.
Public Shock and Outrage
The incident has shocked the nation and sparked widespread discussion on crowd control and safety measures at large religious gatherings. Locals and devotees are demanding better preparedness for future festivals.
As investigations continue, many are left asking: Could this tragedy have been prevented?
